Decades of sound,
we carefully weave,
in a coherent voice,
my past to retrieve.

EXPLORE: II. production
When I began reviewing my past creative output, it quickly became apparent that additional work will be required to weave a bunch of disparate tracks into a coherent whole. Spanning a period of over 20 years they differ significantly in their production quality, partly due to equipment used, but mostly due to my own evolving aptitude in mixing and mastering. Most problematic were tracks created during my peripatetic period, as the equipment I had available during that time, on the road, was barely adequate. As I was still in Bali on a part-time sabbatical, recovering from a serious affliction I suffered in 2023, I had no feasible way of taking upon remastering on my own, nor did I really wanted to. This effort required a fresh set of ears..
I decided to outsource it, so I contacted several people, asking for recommendations, and an old partner-in-mischief Sergej Steblovnik (of Strelnikoff fame) offered to give it a shot himself. It took a few weeks of intense back and forth to properly elucidate the desired sonics for various tracks, and Sergo proved to be an attentive, flexible, and adept engineer. Convinced of his abilities, I entrusted him with the entire project, and we officially started remastering efforts in March of 2024.
Due to the constraints of the vinyl format the tracklist underwent several revisions, as I had to find tradeoffs between conceptual, chronological, and quantitative parameters of each side. Considering the leftover variable space and some chronological inconsistencies caused by sequencing, I decided to create and insert several interludes, not just to occupy space, but to improve the narrative, and provide deeper, more intimate, auditory glimpses of various periods.
In May of 2024 we completed remastering, just in time for my return home. Our digital masters underwent additional sonic shaping by engineers at Record Industry, to further optimize and enhance them for vinyl. Test pressings arrived in July and being very pleased with them I commissioned the full run.
For a variety of reasons, primarily the desire for more flexibility and personal control over the quality, I decided not to entrust gatefold sleeve production to the pressing plant, but rather solicited and supervised its production at home, assisted by Igor Koštomaj who coordinated efforts with local vendors.
